| When Melissa met Jon
Bon Jovi...
In October 1997 we heard about a contest on a PA radio station. Jon Bon Jovi would be playing in Allentown one night only to promote Destination Anywhere. The only way you could get a ticket for the concert was to win. Yea, big chance. Well, yes we won. It was too easy. We stood outside of a car dealership for 2 hours and they called my name out of a lottery. I was thrilled. We went to the concert (which was broadcasted over the radio) and were surprised at how small the venue was. There was not a bad seat in the whole theater. We were probably in the 20th row on the floor it was great. Security allowed you to walk up the aisle to the stage to take picture. It was so cool. He was right there singing his heart out. He played a lot of songs from 'Destination' but he also played a lot of old stuff. Wanted (which I hadn't heard in concert for years) was incredible. You know how people are always screaming and cheering when he tells a story well this was the first time I did not hear a sound from anyone in the audience until he was done. He gave the most touching intro to a song that I have ever heard. 'August 7, 4:15'. I don't know if you've ever wondered about that song or if you already know but here it is anyway. August 7 is the day 4:15 is the time. One of Jon's close friends get a call telling them that their 6 year old daughter is dead. It was a hit and run car accident. The person who killed her drove away yet to be found. Ofcourse Jon told it a lot better then me but that is what happened. Everyone in the audience was stunned and touched. After the concert people were rushing out of the theater. As we walked out the door I started walking towards the back of the theater. There was a black car waiting at the back door so we decided to wait and see if we could catch a glimpse. Ofcourse we were not the only ones to have this idea but the body guards scared a lot of people away...Telling them they were not allowed back there. We were on the sidewalk of an alley. We have the right to stand there if we please so we were not budging. After a half an hour Jon came out. He was six feet away from me. Looking up and saying 'Hi' to everyone. It was wonderful. Just to see him right there in front of you. No screaming crowds or music to block out your voice. He could hear what we said to him. It lasted only minutes but will remain in my memory, as if it happened just today, forever. |
